What’s new in Revit MEP 2023

We are excited to deliver capabilities in Revit 2023 that cover all aspects of the electrical and mechanical design workflow. from early conceptual design and analysis to the creation and documentation of design results, along with enhancements to support detailed design for construction.

These improvements relate to a number of strategic areas, including the use of analysis as a design basis and the use of models as design work products. They also address quality of life issues from BIM practitioners, some of whom were among the top votes on the Revit Idea Station.

Let’s get into that.

NEW ANALYTICAL WORKFLOW FOR ELECTRICAL PRELIMINARY DESIGNS

We are excited to offer electrical engineers and designers a new early-stage design workflow. The concept is similar to that Systems Analysis Framework the HLS engineers since the release 2020.1 is made available. The new capabilities enable electrical engineers to define design information relevant to power distribution in Revit early in a project.

Unlike traditional workflows where engineers manage information in different places—spreadsheets, DWGs, and often PDFs—this new workflow in Revit provides the ability to manage key electrical loads and distribution information without having to physically model any component. We’ve heard from designers that the requirements for distribution systems are defined and iterated long before it’s necessary or even desirable to create a physical model. As a result, it is now possible to conceptually define and connect loads and distribution system elements before starting model creation.

This new workflow provides a BIM-centric way to begin electrical power distribution design workflows, with a vision to connect these workflows to downstream workflows in the future.

Revit 2023: Electrical Analysis

SYSTEMS ARE PRESERVED WHEN PHASES ARE USED

With the new version, the phases for MEP systems can now also be used.

When an element is demolished, it still retains its relationship to the system, so property values ​​such as system name, system classification, and system abbreviation are preserved.

Additionally, when elements are demolished (whether design ducts, cable ducts, cable trays, or fabrication elements), they retain their connectivity to neighboring elements, thereby supporting typical change behavior.

ENERGY ANALYSIS MODEL IMPROVEMENTS

As the need to measure and reduce building energy use and carbon emissions increases, we’ve made a number of fundamental improvements to Revit’s energy analysis model. Benefiting from this are Insight (for early-stage energy analysis / big picture), system analysis (for more detailed sizing and simulation) and gbXML export for third-party calculation solutions.

The primary focus of these improvements is accuracy, precision, and performance. This provides up to 3x faster Revit processing speed and eliminates memory limitations for very large models in Revit 2023.

ALTITUDE LABELING IMPROVEMENTS

Two highly rated MEP Idea Station entries relate to improving the ability to annotate heights on defined locations of MEP elements. The improvement addresses both design and manufacturing parts. Previously, the elevation of an element such as a pipe or duct was always relative to its reference plane. The enhancement in Revit 2023 provides the flexibility to define tags related to the level, project base point, or survey point. We’ve also improved the available built-in parameters for annotating straight elements of MEP systems to provide much more flexibility.

MORE IMPROVEMENTS FOR HVAC AND ELECTRICAL DESIGNERS

We added categories for plumbing equipment and mechanical controls (such as thermostats) to make it easier to define views that contain the expected items.

In addition, it is now possible in the family editor to rehost a connector, allowing you to move it within the family editor without having to redefine it.

Another requirement we implemented is adding a circuit number parameter for the Electrical Equipment category so that they can be included in labels, lists, and view filters like all other electrical and mechanical devices.

Finally, we’ve improved the way annotation symbols nested in a family are correctly retained in certain cases with the “Keep Annotation Orientation” option. There were cases where directional symbols (e.g. an exit sign with a directional arrow) could be displayed inconsistently between the top view and the ceiling view.

MANUFACTURING IMPROVEMENTS

An improvement in manufacturing processes is that we are creating consistency issues associated with the development of control lever holes in duct fittings.

Solving this problem eliminates manual intervention in the process, streamlining the design for manufacturing and assembly operations.

Revit 2023 builds on the basis of Revit 2023.1 and adds improvements for the creation and editing of detailed mechanical models, making it easier to accurately create a ready-to-install model and, in particular, making it easier to deal with the complexity of sloped piping systems.

In 2023, additional capabilities improve the editability of manufacturing elements by applying similar capabilities that existed only for design elements in the past. These are:

  • Height controls for the end of elements to straight fabrication segments, making it easier to adjust the top and bottom height of an element
  • Relocate controls on in-line fittings such as branches and valves to easily adjust their orientation if needed.

PLATFORM IMPROVEMENTS

There are a variety of enhancements to the Revit platform that offer benefits to MEP users. One of our favorites is the new ability to move elements in 2D views, which addresses this long-standing Idea Station element:

“We need the ability to move annotation symbols into families to avoid overlapping symbols in our documentation. Perhaps the annotation could be attached to a widget (similar to the room calculation point) that would allow dynamic movement of the annotation in the project.” – Jerry

In addition, improvements allow marking moved items that address this idea station item:

“I would like to draw attention to the fact that we have Move Elements in several versions of the Autodesk Revit tool. This tool would be very useful for engineers to create isometric views of piping systems, cable trays, air ducts, etc., but we cannot mark moved elements!” – R_Mitin
